Cracked Earth
by Diane Webster

Outside the open car door
a crack staggers across
the highway shoulder to shoulder
toward distant mountain
range even when once
tar sealed its journey
like a scar raised
against abdominal skin,
like mountain’s volcanic
rise and fall with gravity
fissures earth coming
and going despite pavement
dissected by yellow and white lines.
