The Killing Field of Last Thursday
by Mary Ann Meade

Today the field fell apart. That happens
When the world declares another war.
Though if by chance you pass the field,

You will understand how even the dead
Must arrange each battered helmet
According to size and color and rank.

Even now the dead are shuffling back
With coats and tags. Best step aside,
Wait for the unknown soldier to arrive.
