Roots Push
by Diane Webster

The ash tree’s roots push
upward against the grass
like a drowning woman
trying to snatch the surface,
to gulp air to sustain her
for one more plunge beneath
before she grasps the sky
and jerks cloud cover down…
a foggy mist swirls
around the tree’s roots
searching for someone to trip
to submerge like roots
writhing in earth
like a quake ready to erupt
with the next passing.
