Erasing the Board

like Jackson Pollock spattered,
sprayed across the virgin board,
transcript of the jazz of answers,
arrows in a wall of hay,
scorecard from a baseball game,
medals on a chest,
shower of a powerboat;
I wiped away our hieroglyphs
as soon as class had gone,
the room still warm from bodies,
the haze of half-sleep and excitement,
erased our conversation
like pulling down a puzzle,
the quiet sounds of thought
falling to the tray below,
clinging to the metal like a fog,
dust against the windows of a church
