I Love You, Where Are You, Let’s Go to Bed
by Ruth Bavetta

I can read Spanish, and understand it
if the speaker slows down, but I can’t
speak it very well. Te quiero,
dónde estás, vamos a la cama.

My family came from Sicily,
but they never spoke Sicilian
or Italian. When they landed here,
they became Americans.
Ti amo, dove sei, andiamo a letto.

I took Norwegian classes
after I married Leif. At last
I was going to become truly bilingual.
Alas. Jeg elsker deg,
hvor er du and skal vi gĺ til sengs.
