Flip Flops
by Eloísa Pérez-Lozano

Half an inch between my feet and

The amusement park’s rattling ride
The ground, the concrete
The leaking gas
The chewed up gum
The faded paint
The soil of leaned against trees
The stairs, the gravel
The spilled soft drink
The just mown grass
The dance floor’s beat
The Mexican hill in the clouds
The sidewalks to class
The hardwood floors
The hot asphalt
The grains of sand
The Italian cobblestone streets
The tile, the corn stalks
The choir room floor
The subway deck
The immigrant’s home

Thin fabric snuggled
Between one toe and four
Leads me on journeys through worlds
With yoga mat comfort
Soft to my sole
Always flapping away at its back
