"B.J. the City Cat"
by Tara L. Carnes

At first, he
didn’t know
how to climb a tree

this tough guy fell and
bounced off the barn roof -
cashing in on
a kitty life

Slowly he became
a country boy

rolling in the dust
till he was more grayish
than black

helping with
the manly work
______tractors
______chainsaws
______power tools
______chasing dogs

In the darkness
near the fire pit
curled in our laps
his one green eye blinking
