Universal Fabricators
by Diana L Conces

Acetylene glow—
Hold that flame brush
steady, gloves gripping,
paint with fire
along the chalk marks:
a perfect circle drops,
clanging like judgement
as it rides gravity
to the shop floor.

If it can be welded,
it can be made:
__water tanks,
__swimming pools,
__streetlights,
__wind turbines,
__flag poles,
__battleships—
all deconstructed
into squares and circles,
severed from steel,
welded whole.

In the blue light
electrical smell
Hephaestus works:
denim scorched,
leather gloves thick
over knotted fingers,
visor pulled down,
wielding captured sun.
