Instrument Landing
by Cindy Huyser

Gliding through fog-wrapped dark
the pilot prays
altimeter and compass
as the radio crackles
with voices.

On the radar screen,
the plane’s green paint
a heartbeat
moves toward the origin.

Someone is watching—
a voice that speaks
on the assigned frequency
instructions for final approach,
a sort of catechism
in which the pilot responds
with the evidence of faith,
a steadfast belief in the imminent
path to salvation.
