I Fear One Day You Will Be Gone
by Edward Lee

You slice the water with your
slender body,
disappear into its depths,
diving board still humming
from your running step.

When the last ripple touches my toes
the water has already healed,
as though you never dived,
never vanished
into your own reflection.

I remain sitting at the edge,
my fear of water never stronger,
waiting for you to resurface,
eyes closed,
water glistening your skin.

On the edge, I remain.

Waiting.
