Coffee Cup Contemplation
by Travis Blair

Night yawns, her heavy breath
awakens the day. Kicked back
in a rattan balcony chair
I watch dawn give birth to color,
color change the sky. I listen
as people pass through
a wrought-iron gate beneath me.
I watch stucco walls turn white.
Setting my coffee cup on a ledge,
I begin to write. Today a poem
will seep onto my page.
