Before Daybreak
by Rudy Thomas

On the lawn, before daybreak,
leaves walk across the lawn
like hermit crabs on sand
racing to outpace the tide.

The north wind is not the tide.
It moves them with a heavy hand
& does not seek to hide the light of dawn-
ing. I am no predator. I do not mistake

the least of them as food for thought,
but rather the whole ordeal as poetry in motion.
