Fire Thereafter
by Wendy Gist

Char scarred pine trunks
bough tips leap
newborn needles
into Indian summer.
A sea of pinyon jays
color sooty twigs.
Red-helmet
mushrooms blaze
the forest floor and
slender necks
of elongated wild
flowers erupt in flame.
