Long Memories

Junipers siphon
____________water through rock
in a rainless time.
_______________One epic taproot
exploits its own
encoded genius,
__________self-prunes limbs
and sloughs skin,
__________redefining
grotesque. Seems
a dire climate deepens
____________ interior life.
_______________Smoke-blue,
berries attract light,
catch a scrub jay’s eye,
_________________another saver
collecting tomorrows,
_________________cagey with its cache.
Daily dredging want:
_________________This is survival,
bold as desert bones.
