the bulge and nuzzle of the sea
by David Bowles

narrow crescent of beach
tumbled into being by
the lightest of tremors,
a shuddering lover’s touch,
Playa Fandango cleaves to the cliff
silvered virginal by stars and moon.

wending down precarious ledges,
through darkling fronds and ferns,
we emerge upon the pebbly strand
and kneel silent in the shallows—
the Pacific draws away, then resumes
his slow caress, keening muted passion.
