Time and Space
by Richard Dinges,Jr.

          Calendars count up
          an optimistic perspective
          named in words
          from a limited alphabet
          repeated in a numeric
          ladder that climbs
          toward stars we cannot
          see, one for each
of us yet to be born,
          holy sparks that prick
          night sky with eternal
          hope on a cold
          dark canvas, mingling
          seconds and dust
          with each warm breath.
