Memory
by Richard Dinges,Jr.

          Memory smells of orange
          zest in brown paper bags
          filled with peanuts.
          Peppermint candy canes
          top a salty scrabble,
          red and white helix
          wrapped in cellophane.
          A sweet hope separates
          a clear thin distance,
          a faint memory thick,
          anticipating past
          tastes present perfect tense.
