Crossing the Border
by Travis Blair

A map of Mexico covers
my office wall, bright red dots
marking destinations I’ve tasted
like cherry sprinkles decorating
a Tres Leches cake.

Cactus in a terra cotta pot
soaks up sun rays falling through
my window. Ants crawl methodically
from pot to map, crossing the border
just above Tijuana.

I sink my feet into the carpet
beneath my desk, six inches deep
in Rosarito Beach sand. Eyes closed,
I’m transported to a canvas chair
shaded by a Dos Equis umbrella.

But the sound of 18-wheelers
screaming on the five o’clock freeway
jars me back to reality. I google
Three-Day Getaways Near Dallas,
sigh, and frugally plan my weekend.
